In 1970, a drilling rig was established on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, in an attempt to drill the deepest borehole in the world. The project, called the Kola Superdeep Borehole, was an ambitious scientific endeavor that aimed to study the Earth's crust and access its inner layers. It was headed by Scientist Dr Azzakov.  The drilling rig was set up on the eastern shore of the Kola Peninsula, near the town of Zapolyarny. The borehole was drilled using a rotary drilling method, and by 1989, it had reached a depth of 7.5 miles (12 kilometers), making it the deepest borehole in the world at the time. However, the project was abandoned soon after due to a mysterious phenomenon that occurred during the drilling process.
